International gold prices rose on the first trading day of the new year, hitting a six-month high. A fall in the yield on government bonds and gold purchases by the People's Bank of China are believed to have boosted gold prices.

February gold futures, the most traded futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange, closed at USD 1,846.10, up USD 19.90 (1.1%) from the previous trading day on the 3rd (local time). This is the highest level in six months since June 16 last year.

Gold prices rose on the same day in line with a drop in U.S. Treasury yields.

The 10-year yield fell 8.8 basis points to 3.789 percent, approaching its lowest level in a week. The fall in government bond yields is a favorable factor for gold prices. This is because it increases the attractiveness of gold by lowering the opportunity cost of holding interest-free safe assets.

On top of that, gold purchases by the People's Bank of China and governments acted as a positive factor for gold.

Experts analyzed that many central banks and institutions could rather turn to gold amid a strong global dollar.

Adrian Ash, director of Bullion Bolt, said, "Concerns about the financial market have led to a surge in the precious metal market in the new year. Traders are increasing their investment in precious metals as low growth, high inflation and worsening geopolitical prospects are expected."

The current market focus is on the minutes of the Fed's policy meeting on 13-14 last month, which will be released on Wednesday (local time). The December minutes include discussions on the Fed's slowing of its fourth consecutive 75bp hike to 50bp.

This could be an important variable to look at how much the Fed is saying it will continue to tighten this year and whether there is any temperature difference surrounding it.

The precious metal market predicts that if the U.S. central bank releases minutes to slow down the rate hike, there will be a possibility of further increases in gold prices.

Gold is considered a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, but it tends to be less attractive in high-interest rates.

Meanwhile, international silver prices rose 20 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $24.236 an ounce in March. In April, Platinum closed at $1,108.70 an ounce, up $10.40 (1%). In March, palladium fell $105.10 (about 5.9%) to $1,692.90 an ounce, and copper fell 4 cents (about 1.2%) to $3.7665 a pound in March.

Domestic gold prices remained weak on the 4th.

According to the Korea Gold Exchange, when a consumer buys a piece of pure gold (24k, 3.75g), the price is 324,500 won (including VAT), down 0.31% (KRW 1,000) from the previous session's closing price (as of 10:05 a.m.).

However, when consumers sold 1 dollar of pure gold, the price was 289,500 won, up 0.35% from the previous session. When selling 18k and 14k, the prices were also 209,900 won and 162,100 won, respectively, up 0.34% and 0.31% from the previous trading day's closing price (when buying 18k and 14k, the product price is applied).

In addition, the market price was 4,330 won when buying silver and 3,310 won when selling silver, down 1.62% and 1.81% from the previous transaction, respectively. The price of platinum was 187,000 won and the price of platinum was 157,000 won, down 1.07% and 0.64%, respectively, from the previous trading day.

The price of a penny of pure gold on the Korea Exchange, another exchange, is trading at 324,500 won (including vat), up 4,000 won from the previous day, and at 289,500 won, up 500 won when sold.

At the same time, gold prices on the Korea Exchange (KRX) are trading at 75,690 won per gram, up 0.26% from the previous trading day's closing price.

On the previous day, the gold price of the Korea Exchange (KRX) closed at 75,490 won per gram, and the total transaction price was 4.88 billion won.

At this time, the international gold price (as of 10:05 a.m., London LBMA GOLD Price) is moving around $1,839.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate opened at 1280.5 won, up 9.5 won from the previous trading day's closing price (1271 won).
