31일(미국 현지시간) 국제 금값이 중동의 지정학적 리스크가 커지면서 오름세를 나타냈다. 다만 FOMC 연준 파월의장 발언 이후 금가격의 방향은 하락세로 바꿨다.
수요일(현지시간) 뉴욕상품거래소에서 올해 4월물 금값은 전일 대비 16.5달러(0.8%) 상승한 온스당 2,067.40달러에 거래를 마감했다. 이는 지난달 2일 이후 한 달만에 가장 높은 수준이다. 금가격은 이날까지 3거래일 연속 상승했다. 금의 안전 피난처 수요가 소환된 영향으로 풀이된다. 금은 경제 및 지정학적 위기에 대한 헤지 수단으로 간주되기 때문이다.
이날도 중동 지역의 군사적 갈등이 고조되면서 금은 안전 피난처로써의 지위를 누렸다.
영국이 예멘의 친이란 반군 세력 후티의 상선 공격을 차단하기 위해 홍해에 항공모함을 파견할 준비를 마쳤다고 영국 텔레그래프와 독일 dpa통신 등이 30일(현지시간) 보도했다.
보도에 따르면 제임스 히피 영국 국방부 부장관은 이날 영국 항공모함이 미국으로 돌아가는 미국 항공모함 드와이트 아이젠하워호를 대신하기 위해 홍해로 파견될 수 있다고 말했다.
히피 부장관은 영국이 "미국과 협력하고 홍해에서의 틈새를 메우기 위해" 개입할 수 있다고 말했다.
그는 "아이젠하워호가 영원히 그 지역에 있을 수는 없다"며 "따라서 (영국은) 이 지역에서 항모 주둔을 유지하면서 미국과 협력해 군사력을 제공하는 것"이라고 설명했다.
미국은 유럽과 아시아를 잇는 주요 항로인 홍해의 안보 확보를 위해 다국적 함대 연합을 출범시키고 이달 12일부터 영국과 함께 예멘 내 후티 반군의 군사시설을 거듭 공습했다.
하지만 후티 반군은 여전히 상선 공격을 멈추지 않고 있으며, 홍해의 미 해군 함정을 직접 겨냥하는 행위도 서슴지 않고 있다.
후티 반군은 31일 예멘 방송사 알-마시라 TV를 통해 해당 공격이 그레이블리호를 겨냥한 것이었다고 밝혔다.
후티는 그러면서 자위권 차원에서 홍해에서 미군과 영국군 군함을 계속 표적으로 삼을 것이라고 경고했다.
이 같은 중동 불안이 지속되면서 금값은 장중 2,074.60달러까지 치솟았다.
다만, 이날 이틀 간의 FOMC 정례회의를 마친 뒤 가진 제롬 파월 미국 연준 의장의 기자회견 이후 금가격은 하락세로 돌아서며 상승폭을 일부 반납했다.
미국 연방준비제도(Fed·연준)가 올해 첫 통화 정책회의에서 기준금리를 예상대로 동결했다.
제롬 파월 의장은 기자회견을 통해 3월 회의에서 금리 인하에 대한 시장 기대를 뒤집었다.
금값은 연준 의장이 연설을 마친 직후 한때 장중 최저치인 2,048.80달러까지 내려앉았다.
파월 의장은 이날 회견에서 "대부분의 연준 위원이 올해 어느 시점에 기준금리를 내리는 데 동의했다"면서도 "금리인하를 너무 서두르면 인플레 경로가 뒤집힐 수 있다"고 신중한 입장을 전했다.
파월 의장은 "기준금리를 내리려면 인플레이션 완화가 지속돼야 한다는 더 강한 자신감이 들어야 한다"며 "우리는 조금 더 좋은 데이터가 필요하다"고 말했다.
그는 "우리는 현재 금리인하가 너무 이르거나 늦지 않게 리스크를 관리하는 모드로 들어갔다"며 "3월까지 금리인하를 충분히 자신하지는 못할 것 같다"고 말했다.
그러면서 그는 "우리는 아직 승리를 선언하기엔 이르다"며 "FOMC 내에 위원간 전망 차이가 크다"고 덧붙였다.
파월 의장의 발언은 3월까지 금리를 인하할 정도로 인플레이션에 자신감을 가지긴 힘들 것이라는 전망이다.
그동안 시장은 이르면 연준이 3월에 금리를 인하할 것으로 예상해왔으며, 최근 들어서는 첫 금리인하 시점이 5월로 후퇴한 바 있다.
이제 귀금속 시장은 오는 2일 연준이 주목하고 있는 미 노동부의 1월 고용보고서 발표에 초점을 맞추고 있다.
이로써 1월 한달간 금값은 0.2% 하락세로 마감했다. 지난달 연준의 조기 금리 인하 기대감이 후퇴하면서 지난해 11월 이후 2달 만에 월별 하락세로 돌아섰다.
전문가들은 금시세가 당분간 심리적 지지선이 2천 달러선을 유지할 것으로 내다봤다.
TD 증권의 상품 전략가인 다니엘 갈리(Daniel Ghali)는 "중동 불안 등 지정학적 리스크와 알고리즘적 매수 활동이 가격을 뒷받침할 것으로 예상한다"며 "금 수요 동인의 주요 구성 요소인 강력한 실물 수요와 중앙은행 수요도 같은 방향으로 움직이고 있다"고 말했다.
한편, 은 가격은 0.24% 하락한 온스당 23.169달러에 거래를 마쳤고, 구리는 0.12% 하락한 3.9060달러를 기록했다.
이 시각 국제 금시세(오전 10시 기준, 런던 LBMA 금값시세)는 2,040달러 선에 움직이고 있다.
국내 금값은 1일 오전 강보합세를 나타냈다.
이날 한국금거래소 따르면 소비자가 순금 1돈(24k, 3.75g) 살때 가격은 전장 대비 0.27% 오른 373,000원(VAT포함)이다(오전 10시 기준).
소비자가 순금 1돈 팔때 가격은 전장과 같은 333,000원이다. 18k, 14k 팔때 가격도 각각 244,800원, 189,800원으로 전 거래일과 비슷한 수준이다.(18k와 14k 살때는 제품시세를 적용한다).
이 밖에 은 살때 시세는 전 거래일 대비 0.92% 하락한 4,330원, 팔때는 0.87% 내린 3,440원을 나타냈다. 백금 살때 가격은 전일과 같은 167,000원, 팔때 가격은 0.71% 오른 140,000원이다.
한국거래소(KRX)와 신한은행 금시세도 소폭 오르며, 1㎏짜리 금 현물의 1g당 가격은 8만7천원 선에 거래되고 있다.
오전 10시 기준, 한국거래소(KRX) 금 가격은 전일 종가 대비 0.24% 오른 g당 87,630원을, 신한은행 금가격은 g당 87,451.33원을 나타내고 있다.
서울 외환시장에서 원·달러 환율은 전 거래일보다 0.4원 오른 1,335.0원에 개장했다.
