-31st international gold price 0.8%¡è
-Today¡¯s gold price (Korea Gold Exchange 0.27%¡è)

On the 31st (US local time), international gold prices showed an upward trend as geopolitical risks in the Middle East increased. However, after FOMC Fed Chairman Powell's remarks, the direction of gold prices changed to a downward trend.

On Wednesday (local time) at the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold price for April futures this year closed at $2,067.40 per ounce, up $16.5 (0.8%) from the previous day. This is the highest level in a month since the 2nd of last month. Gold prices rose for three consecutive trading days until this day. This can be interpreted as a result of the summoned demand for safe havens for gold. This is because gold is considered a hedge against economic and geopolitical crises.

On this day, as military conflict in the Middle East region intensified, gold enjoyed its status as a safe haven.

Britain's Telegraph and Germany's dpa news agency reported on the 30th (local time) that Britain has prepared to dispatch an aircraft carrier to the Red Sea to block attacks on merchant ships by pro-Iran rebels Houthis in Yemen.

According to reports, British Deputy Minister of Defense James Heaphy said on this day that a British aircraft carrier could be dispatched to the Red Sea to replace the US aircraft carrier Dwight Eisenhower, which is returning to the United States.

Heaphy said Britain could intervene "to work with the United States and fill the gap in the Red Sea".

¡°The Eisenhower cannot be in that area forever,¡± he explained, ¡°and therefore (Britain's) intention is to maintain her carrier presence in the area while also providing military force in collaboration with the United States.¡±

The United States launched a multinational fleet coalition to ensure security in the Red Sea, a major sea route connecting Europe and Asia, and has repeatedly carried out airstrikes on Houthi rebels' military facilities in Yemen together with the United Kingdom since the 12th of this month.

However, the Houthi rebels are still not stopping their attacks on merchant ships and are not hesitating to directly target US Navy ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebels announced on the 31st through Yemeni broadcaster Al-Mashira TV that the attack was aimed at the Gravely.

The Houthis also warned that they would continue to target US and British warships in the Red Sea out of self-defense.

As this instability in the Middle East continued, the price of gold soared to $2,074.60 during the day.

However, after U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's press conference held after the two-day FOMC regular meeting, gold prices turned downward, giving up some of the gains.

The U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) froze its benchmark interest rate as expected at its first monetary policy meeting of the year.

Chairman Jerome Powell overturned market expectations of an interest rate cut at the March meeting through a press conference.

The price of gold fell to an intraday low of $2,048.80 immediately after the Federal Reserve Chairman finished his speech.

At the press conference that day, Chairman Powell said, ¡°Most Federal Reserve members agreed to lower the benchmark interest rate at some point this year,¡± but expressed a cautious stance, saying, ¡°If we rush to cut interest rates too quickly, the inflation path could be reversed.¡±

Chairman Powell said, ¡°In order to lower the benchmark interest rate, we need to have stronger confidence that inflation will continue to ease,¡± and added, ¡°We need a little better data.¡±

¡°We are currently in a risk management mode to ensure that we do not cut interest rates too early or too late,¡± he said. ¡°I don¡¯t think we will be confident enough to cut interest rates until March.¡±

He added, ¡°It is still too early to declare victory,¡± and ¡°there is a large difference in outlook among members of the FOMC.¡±

Chairman Powell's remarks predict that it will be difficult to be confident enough in inflation to cut interest rates by March.

So far, the market has been expecting the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates as early as March, but recently the first interest rate cut was pushed back to May.

The precious metals market is now focused on the release of the US Department of Labor's January employment report, which the Federal Reserve is paying attention to on the 2nd.

As a result, gold prices ended the month of January with a 0.2% decline. As expectations for an early interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve faded last month, it turned to a monthly decline for the first time in two months since November of last year.

Experts predicted that the gold price psychological support level would remain at the $2,000 level for the time being.

¡°We expect geopolitical risks, including unrest in the Middle East, and algorithmic buying activity to support prices,¡± said Daniel Ghali, commodity strategist at TD Securities. ¡°Strong physical demand and central banks are key components of gold demand drivers. ¡°Demand is also moving in the same direction,¡± he said.

Meanwhile, silver prices fell 0.24% to $23.169 per ounce, and copper fell 0.12% to $3.9060.

At this time, the international gold price (as of 10 a.m., London LBMA gold price) is moving around the $2,040 level.

Domestic gold prices showed a strong trend on the morning of the 1st.

According to the Korea Gold Exchange on this day, when a consumer buys 1 dong (24k, 3.75g) of pure gold, the price is 373,000 won (VAT included), a 0.27% increase from the previous price (as of 10 a.m.).

When a consumer sells 1 dong of pure gold, the price is 333,000 won, the same as the battlefield. When selling 18k and 14k, the prices are 244,800 won and 189,800 won, respectively, which are similar to the previous trading day. (When buying 18k and 14k, the product market price is applied).

In addition, the price when buying silver was 4,330 won, down 0.92% from the previous trading day, and when selling silver, it was 3,440 won, down 0.87%. The price for buying platinum is 167,000 won, the same as the previous day, and the price for selling it is 140,000 won, up 0.71%.

Gold prices at the Korea Exchange (KRX) and Shinhan Bank are also rising slightly, and the price per gram of 1 kg spot gold is trading at around 87,000 won.

As of 10 am, the Korea Exchange (KRX) gold price is 87,630 won per gram, up 0.24% from the previous day's closing price, and the Shinhan Bank gold price is 87,451.33 won per gram.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate opened at 1,335.0 won, up 0.4 won from the previous trading day.
