-2-day international gold price 0.84%¡é
-Today¡¯s gold price (Korea Gold Exchange 0.27%¡è)

On the 2nd (US local time), international gold prices plummeted due to stronger-than-expected US economic indicators. However, in one week, the price of gold turned upward for the first time in three weeks.

On Friday (local time) at the New York Mercantile Exchange, the gold price for April futures this year closed at $2,053.70 per ounce, down $17.4 (0.84%) from the previous day. Gold prices fell after 5 trading days.

Gold prices fell due to the monster US employment data for January. As the U.S. job market remains strong, it is predicted that the interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve will be further delayed. The delay in the Federal Reserve's interest rate cut is a negative factor for gold.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that non-agricultural employment in January of this year increased by 353,000 from the previous month.

This figure is nearly twice as high as the 185,000 increase expected by experts compiled by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Non-farm employment recorded the largest increase in a year since January last year. In January last year, non-agricultural employment increased by 482,000 from the previous month.

The January figure also more than tripled the previously announced ADP private employment increase of 107,000.

Non-agricultural employment figures were also revised significantly upward at the end of last year.

The figure for December last year was revised upward by 117,000, from an increase of 216,000 to an increase of 333,000. Although December's figures were revised to a much higher level than before, January's figures also exceeded the previous month's figures.

Average hourly wages also rose beyond expectations.

The average hourly wage in January was $34.55, up about $0.19 (0.6%) from the previous month. This is a steeper increase than the 0.3% increase that was expected by the market.

Experts analyzed that the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed)'s interest rate cut in March appears difficult as the job market has shown to be very strong and wages, a major factor in inflation, have also shown a sharp rise.

According to CME Group's FedWatch tool, the probability of a 25bp interest rate freeze in March has increased to 82.5%. In fact, it puts emphasis on the fact that it is difficult to cut interest rates. The probability of a 25bp interest rate cut in May was 59.0%.

¡°If interest rates remain where they are and there is a lack of clarity on that, we will see an environment where the upside for gold prices is somewhat muted,¡± said Joseph Cavattoni, market strategist at WGC.

As U.S. employment improved, the dollar and government bond yields also strengthened, putting downward pressure on gold prices.

The dollar index, which reflects the dollar's value against six major currencies, recorded 103.785, up 0.71% from the previous day.

The 10-year government bond interest rate rose 14.56bp to 4.006% as of 3 p.m. on the previous trading day. The 2-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to monetary policy, surged 19.08bp to 4.391% during the same period, and the 30-year Treasury bond yield rose 10.68bp to 4.209%.

Rising dollar and government bond yields are unfavorable factors for gold prices. This is because the perceived price of gold, which is usually traded in dollars, increases, and the opportunity cost of holding gold on which no interest is paid increases.

The price of gold, which closed at $2,070 per ounce the previous day, fell by more than 1% to the $2,040 level at one point during the day as the U.S. January employment report was released this morning.

While expectations for an early interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve have receded, the international gold price this week rose 1.8% at the closing price compared to the previous week, ending on an upward trend for the first time in three weeks. It has been interpreted that safe haven gold purchases due to heightened military concerns in the Middle East have driven up gold prices over the week.

¡°Gold is holding on like a barnacle despite the huge employment report,¡± said Tai Wong, an independent metals analyst based in New York. ¡°But we will have to wait and see if gold prices go much lower.¡±

Meanwhile, silver prices fell 1.89% to $22.796 per ounce, and copper fell 0.83% to $3.8215. Platinum fell 2.1% to $894.50, and palladium fell 1.4% to $949.05.

At this time, the international gold price (as of 1 p.m., London LBMA gold price) is moving around the $2,038 level.

Domestic gold prices showed a strong trend on the 3rd.

According to the Korea Gold Exchange on this day, when a consumer buys 1 dong (24k, 3.75g) of pure gold, the price is 375,000 won (VAT included), a 0.27% increase from the previous price (as of 1 p.m.). This is the highest level this year.

When a consumer sells 1 dong of pure gold, the price is 334,000 won, the same as the battlefield. When selling 18k and 14k, the prices are 245,500 won and 190,400 won, respectively, which are the same as the previous trading day. (When buying 18k and 14k, the product market price is applied).

In addition, the price when buying silver was 4,300 won, down 1.4% from the previous trading day, and when selling silver, it was 3,420 won, down 1.17%. The price to buy platinum is 163,000 won, down 1.23% from the previous day, and the price to sell it is 136,000 won, down 1.47% from the previous day.

The previous day, the won-dollar exchange rate in the Seoul foreign exchange market closed at 1,322.6 won, down 9.2 won from the previous trading day.
