지난 2022년 8월 21일, 광주 소재 대학에서 대학 1학년생인 유혁군(20세)이 화단에서 사망한 채 발견됐다. 유혁군은 어려서부터 부모님으로부터 버림받아 여러 보육원을 거쳐 어렵게 자랐다.
대학에 진학 후에는 사회복지사를 꿈꿨으며, 봉사활동도 열심히 했다. 그러나 2학기 개강을 앞두고 돌연 사망했다. 추락 당시 누군가 함께 있었다는 의혹과 보이스피싱 범죄로 인한 피해 의심이 있었으나, 경찰의 CCTV 확인 결과 유혁군은 잠겨있던 강의동 옥상 문을 스스로 열고 나가 주저 없이 몸을 던진 것으로 밝혀졌다.
대학 친구들은 유혁군이 1학기 중반부터 수업을 빠지고 여러 아르바이트를 하면서 돈 문제로 보육원과 갈등하는 모습을 목격했다고 말했다. 만 18세가 되면서 보육원에서 나와 자립하려 했으나, 어떤 이유로 인해 보육원의 보호 조치가 연장됐다. 유 군은 보육원과 대학 기숙사에서 거주했으며, 보육원 관계자는 유 군의 죽음에 대해 모르는 상태다.
